Why We Love Nigerian Dwarf Goats on the Hudstead

Why We Love Nigerian Dwarf Goats on the Hudstead
Nigerian Dwarf Goats have quickly become a favorite on our farm. Their friendly personalities, small size, and surprisingly rich milk make them the perfect addition to any homestead—big or small.
Quick Facts
- Size: 17–21 inches at the withers
- Milk Production: 1–2 quarts per day; high butterfat (6–10%)
- Temperament: Sweet, curious, and highly social
- Lifespan: 10–15 years
Why They’re Perfect for Small Farms
Unlike their larger dairy counterparts, Nigerian Dwarfs don’t need a ton of space. A simple 8×10’ shelter plus a secure pasture is enough to keep a pair happy. Their small size also makes handling and milking a breeze—even for kids or folks new to goats.
Managing Their Nutrition
Because they’re efficient milkers, Nigerian Dwarfs need a balanced diet:
- High‑quality grass hay (free‑choice)
- Small daily grain ration formulated for dairy goats
- Access to a loose mineral mix (goat‑specific!)
- Clean, fresh water at all times
Social Butterflies
These little goats thrive on companionship—both of their own kind and of you! Spend a few minutes each day brushing, hand‑feeding treats, or even taking them on a short walk. A well‑socialized Nigerian Dwarf is not only easier to manage but also a delight to have around.
Getting Started
- Build Secure Housing: A sturdy shed with a solid floor and secure latches.
- Invest in Fencing: 4‑foot woven wire or electric netting works great.
- Source Healthy Stock: Buy from a reputable breeder with CAE/TB‑free herd health.
- Plan for Milking: Even if you don’t plan to milk daily, practice handling early.
